Assessment of Variable Geometry Orifice Compressor Technology Impact in a New Generation of Compression Ignition Powertrains at Low-End and Transient Operation

Surge is a phenomenon that limits the operating range of compressor at low engine speeds and high boost pressure in turbocharged powertrains. This article assesses two prototype turbochargers variable geometry orifice (VGO) which compensate for limitation speeds. The VGO prototypes modify inlet section, extending characteristic map into lower mass flows (surge limit region). analyzed are also both equipped with turbine (VGT) technology. experiments focus on low-end torque operation ranges steady transient running conditions. experimental results used to validate 1D physical model.
